48: Drop the diet - IE Series Introduction, with co-author Evelyn Tribole
The Lane 9 Podcast - A podcast by Alexis Fairbanks and Heather Caplan RDN - Thursdays
Now is not the time to start a new diet, or "get back on track"—neither is tomorrow, nor the day after that. It won't work. But we have something else for you, that just might save your sanity. Introducing: RD Real Talk's first series, on Intuitive Eating. Evelyn Tribole, MS RD is the co-author of the book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works. It is NOT a diet; it is not an eating plan; it is not a set of nutrition rules. And it is not simply eating when you're hungry, and stopping when you're full. Evelyn helps me kick off a 10-episode series on Intuitive Eating (IE), in which I cover each of the 10 principles with fellow dietitians and therapists. She takes us back to 1995, when the book was first published, and how she and her co-author, Elyse Resch, finally decided enough was enough. No more putting clients on diets, no more weight loss plans, no more pretending that either of these things "work" for people. They questioned and challenged traditional dietetic practices, found the research to support their paradigm, and put it out to the world. She's NOT into this whole "clean eating" movement, wonders when taking pride in the way we eat became important to our identities (a la Orthorexia), and indulges a burning question I had about her Olympic Trials Marathon run (🤓). I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, and can't wait to share the rest of the IE series with you! Stay tuned. Questions? Check out the series page on my website: heathercaplan.com .
