102: Please try to understand thin privilege
The Lane 9 Podcast - A podcast by Alexis Fairbanks and Heather Caplan RDN - Thursdays
Thin privilege exists. It's not a blessing, an entitlement, a praise on anyone's body size (or lack thereof), it's not a label, not something you've asked for, and not something you've earned. It is sociocultural and systemic. It is oppressing body types that exist outside the accepted norm. It is the ease of existing in this world, as Cara Harbstreet put it, "without the shadow of weight stigma following you around." But first: Robyn Nohling and I co-host this episode and do a quick real-life-check-in, talk about why people ask food/health questions to the non-experts, and then, of course, thin privilege. The post that re-sparked this discussion about thin privilege in the dietetics world: "We have to talk about thin privilege" by Kathleen Meehan RD.
