Estuary is a noun that refers to the tidal mouth of a large river. The Latin word aestus (ESS toose) means ‘tide.’ Our word of the day is derived from a variant of this that means ‘tidal part of the shore.’ There’s a lovely place in New York where the Hudson River meets the shore. This estuary is my favorite place in the Big Apple.
