Hello animation fans and ASPers! This week, Josh is joined by Caleb Masters from The Cinematropolis to discuss from of the films from the Animation Is Film Festival. We discuss: Bunuel In The Labyrinth Of Turtles -  In a stranger than fiction tale befitting of the master surrealist filmmaker, Buñuel and the Labyrinth of the Turtles captures the moment when, based on a wild lottery ticket promise, Buñuel and his friend and new benefactor Ramón set out to make the unexpected and ambitious documentary on the Las Hurdes region in Spain. The production tests Bunuel’s mental stamina as well as the two men’s friendship as the fate of the project comes into question. Check out the trailer for Bunuel In The Labyrinth Of Turtles HERE FUNAN -  Winner of the Cristal for a Feature Film, the highest award at the Annecy International Festival of Animated Films, Funan is a powerful and beautiful story of a young mother’s fight and determination to hold on to her family during unspeakably trying times. During the Khmer Rouge madness of the 1970s in Phnom Penh, young mother Chou’s life is brutally disrupted when the population is deported to camps and she is separated from her 4-year-old son. While her world falls apart Cho remains steadfast in her determination to find her son and reunite her family even if it means risking everything. Check out the trailer for Funan HERE MIRAI -  A young boy encounters a magical garden which enables him to travel through time and meet his relatives from different eras, with guidance by his younger sister from the future. An official selection at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, and the epic capstone of director Mamoru Hosoda’s career, Mirai is a sumptuous, magical, and emotionally soaring adventure about the ties that bring families together and make us who we are. (Courtesy of GKIDS) Check out the trailer for Mirai HERE MODEST HEROES -  An ambitious collection of three thrilling tales created by some of the greatest talents working in Japanese animation today. In Kanini & Kanino, directed by Academy Award®-nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi (When Marnie Was There, Mary and The Witch’s Flower), two crab brothers embark on a grand underwater adventure to find their father, after an accident carries him far downstream. Depicted as tiny beings in a large and merciless natural world, the brothers must evade a series of freshwater predators if they are ever to reunite with their family again.  In Life Ain’t Gonna Lose, acclaimed animator Yoshiyuki Momose (key animator on Isao Takahata’s films at Studio Ghibli, and animation director of the video game Ni No Kuni) makes his directorial debut with a very different kind of story. Shun is an 8-year-old boy living in Tokyo, who suffers from a life-threatening allergy to eggs. While his mother works hard to protect him and lead an ordinary life, one afternoon Shun has an unexpected encounter with an egg product, and he must begin a race against time to save himself. Lastly, in Invisible (the directing debut of Akihiko Yamashita, a talented key animator on many of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki’s best-known films) a young man wakes up one morning to discover that no one can see him. As he finds his life beginning to quite literally float away, a momentous decision gives him the chance to reclaim his humanity.
