Ep. 7: Know what your jam is

Hey Everyone,Welcome to episode seven of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence. In today's episode we are joined by the incredibly inspiring Ironman triathlete Claire Shea Simonds. Claire has spent the last 25 years chasing her goal of completing an Ironman event in under 10 hours. Arguably one of the toughest single day events anywhere on the planet, Claire is one of a small handful of individuals to not just take on this event, but complete it as a 40 something whilst also maintaining a demanding full time job!In this episode,Claire shares how she went from crying and hiding in portaloos before her first Ironman race to standing calmly and confident on the starting line. Her journey to qualifying 6 times to compete at the world championships of Ironman, the famous Kona event.Claire kindly tells us why at Ironman events they paint numbers on your arms and legs, not for the faint hearted! We discuss whether or not confidence is a skill rather than something that you just are.Claire discusses how NOT meeting her pre race milestones impacts her confidence and how she has to manage that very carefully.Claire’s fascinating ability to endure and suffer pain and keep on going regardless of how much pain her body is experiencing.Claire shares her thoughts on confidence being very personal to each individual. How Claire’s confidence can be easily undermined by others if she doesn’t manage her interactions well.We have a great conversation about Claire’s strategies in order for her to perform at her best.Claire beautifully shares that her confidence has a certain fragility to it, and that her awareness of it’s fragility has developed over time and in certain situations. The lessons Claire has learned from competing in Ironman support her ability to be confident in her day job.How even now Claire still has challenges with social engagements and interactions, and how deeply bothered she is about what people think. We have a great conversation about how to construct confidence for any given situation and controlling the controllable.Claire has a beautiful energy and warmth, her relentless pursuit of achieving her goal after 25 years is inspiring to say the least. Although a small, petite, well spoken lady, she clearly has something special inside which allows her to endure suffering far more than many of us can begin to imagine. Listening to her it seems almost effortless, and as if it’s normal to have the tenacity, resilience and confidence to do what she does. This is a wonderful conversation with very tangible content for you to take away and implement. If you enjoy the podcast, please SUBSCRIBE to our show and leave a review.
