In the world of popular culture, Steve is best known for an interview that he gave televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in 1985, while he was recovering from the effects of the experimental AIDS drug suramin, that not only discussed and dispelled many of the myths surrounding HIV/AIDS, but marked the first time that a televangelist had given an affirming interview to a gay man living with AIDS.
