Whooping cough (or pertussis; in Finnish “hinkuyskä”) is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis and is responsible for an estimated 160 700 deaths each year worldwide. Despite extensive immunizations, pertussis is still one of the world’s worst controlled vaccine preventable disease. Epidemics occurred in many industrial countries. Professor Qiushui He will explain in his lecture the reasons why pertussis is re-emerging and what actions we have taken in Europe in diagnosis, surveillance and prevention of this disease.
