e334. From DNC to SDCC: Comparing the Convention Experience

The VoxPopcast - A podcast by Vox Populorum - Mondays

In the last couple of weeks in America we’ve seen both San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) and the Democratic National Convention (DNC). These are quite possibly two of the nerdiest gatherings that one can imagine but for different groups. Of course Mav is enough of a pop culture and politics addict that he watched them both! And as he did, he noticed a lot of similarities, as well as similarities to other kinds of conventions and conferences. On this insightful episode, Mav and Wayne are joined by guests Dawn Griffin — a comic book artists — and Jennifer Slater — a DNC 2020 volunteer — to dive into the intriguing parallels between political conventions and comic book conventions. They explore the evolution, purpose, and personal experiences of these events with personal anecdotes and reflections, as well as the history and purpose of both kinds of conventions including inspiration, networking, strategic planning behind the pageantry and the importance of a sense of community and the joy these gatherings bring to both newcomers and seasoned attendees.
