Martagon Lilies with Dr. Ieuan Evans

The Sustainable Flowers Podcast - A podcast by Heather & Clara

Martagon lilies are a true northern gem which we hope will become a huge cut flower trend.   In this episode we have a wonderful conversation about these flowers with the "Martagon King",  Dr. Ieuan Evans, one of our most prolific plant breeders on the prairies, about these lovely flowers.   Dr. Evans is the originator of the fabulous Evans Cherry, but did you know he also breeds lilies (asiatics and martagons) lilacs, irises and a whole range of vegetables specifically for our northern prairie climates?   His martagon "Jennifer Evans" was shortlisted for Plant of the Year at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2014, his martagon "Megan Evans" recently won Best Lily in the Show ( of ALL the lilies) at the 2017 North American Lily Society Show  and he was recently profiled by the Royal Horticultural Society!   This episode is chock-full of insights about martagons, the thriving lily breeding community on the prairies, potential as a cut flower (especially newly developed sterile varieties) and how to propagate martagons.   And I  challenge you to resist going out and buying his award winning "Megan Evans"! Dr. Evans mentions the following resources: Alberta Regional Lily Society Dr. Evans' youtube video about propagating martagons You can contact Dr. Evans to receive the catalogue of martagons he has for sale.  His email address is dr.irevans (at) gmail.com. Our theme music was composed and performed by Heather's son Callum and audio editing was completed by the uber talented Laura Eccleston.
