Divine Delphiniums! a conversation with Katrina of New Zealand Delphiniums

The Sustainable Flowers Podcast - A podcast by Heather & Clara

One of the most reliable perennials for our zones, and one no one should be without, is the delphinium!  Generally pest and disease free, hardy, fabulous fresh and dried, and in that most elusive of flower colours- true blue.  But that's not the only colour these beauties come in, thanks to the breeding efforts of the Dowdeswells in New Zealand. This week we chatted with Katrina Hindmarsh, plant breeder and owner of our favorite supplier of delphinium seed, Dowdeswell's Delphiniums.   Dowdeswell's was recently rechristened as New Zealand Delphiniums, as Katrina picked up the reins of the operations from the founders, Terry and Janice Dowdeswell.   Our conversation with Katrina covered a lot of territory including her plant breeding focii, new cultivars in the pipe, and how to successfully grow these beauties from seed, which you can also see on Katrina's youtube channel New Zealand Delphiniums Seed Germination Tips. Don't forget to send Katrina your requests for delphinium characteristics to help her with her breeding program Katrina's Contact! Our theme music was composed and performed by Heather's son Callum, and the challenging job of audio editing done by the uber-talented Laura Eccleston.
