Voice of the Voiceless w/ Lauren Shadi

The Sod's Law Podcast - A podcast by GoldBean Studios

This week my guest is award-winning French-to-English translator and interpreter Lauren Shadi. Lauren has been described as the mouthpiece for criminals and the voiceless, having to accurately interpret for both sides and remain impartial. One day she might be interpreting at a Premier League Football Club, the next maybe sitting in a high-security prison. This was a particularly interesting one for us to record as not only does it get exciting talking about working with human-trafficking charities, criminal cases and high stakes contracts, it also gets emotional; talking about interpreting for people going through horrendous medical situations, trauma and loss. Lauren was also the recipient of the 2020 Institute of Translation & Interpreting’s (ITI) award for Best Performance on an interpreting assignment, which we talk about a little bit in the episode. I think it’s important to note that Lauren had to be guarded throughout this conversation due to professional confidentiality, and despite this I think it’s one of the more unique episodes we’ve recorded to date.
