Supporting the Bright & the Curious w/ Ian Thorpe

The Sod's Law Podcast - A podcast by GoldBean Studios

This week my guest is educator and fundraiser, Ian Thorpe. Ian was one of the Surmasters or Deputy High Masters at Manchester Grammar School whilst I was a pupil there, and has a fantastic story of how his career progressed. His focus was inspiring - to help boys like himself, from financially constrained backgrounds, gain access to the best possible education after government funding ceased to support them. Since Ian set up the MGS Bursary Appeal in the late 90s after the withdrawal of the Assisted Places Scheme, hundreds of boys from all over the Greater Manchester and the North West UK have benefited from the fund, now called the MGS Trust. Some of you will know that Manchester Grammar is a huge part of my history and it was a pleasure to catch up with Ian as I’d not spoken to him in around 13 years.
