The Sleepover Club: Is Performativity A Bad Thing?

Peformativity in the realm of online discourse has become a catch-all term for appearing fake and hollow; whether that be in your political activism or your identity. But what does it really mean to be performative? This week Ione and Olivia are taking a deep dive into the world of socio-political performativity; from its origins in queer theory, to our modern use of the term, and whether being performative is a bad thing at all. We'll be discussing how artifice and inauthenticity have long been used to undermine marginalised people, why online debate has come to skew our understanding of the term, and if performativity feeds into cancel culture and our quest for power. The Polyester Podcast is brought to you by Polyester's founding editor in chief Ione Gamble (@ionegamble), and co-hosted and produced by Olivia Graham.
