He has run 17,000+km across the world's deserts, and unsupported expeditions in some of the coldest places on the planet.In 2006, former "pack a day smoker" turned ultra-runner Ray Zahab and two friends, Charlie Engle and Kevin Lin set out on an expedition to cross the Sahara Desert by foot. 111 days and 7,500 km after leaving the coast of Senegal, Africa they completed their journey by stepping into the Red Sea.
