Using LinkedIn Effectively With James Potter

In this week’s podcast episode Paula is joined by James Potter, The LinkedIn Man, talking about everything on LinkedIn. What does James Potter do? James helps people on LinkedIn look more like themselves and to use LinkedIn for its purpose. ‘If you use a spade when you should use a fork, you're not gonna get the same result’ - this is the same with LinkedIn. Should landscapers and garden designers be on LinkedIn? Think of LinkedIn as a big room of business people, sharing pictures and posting regularly will keep your business in front of the minds of other people. There are in fact 194,000 people who talk about gardening on their profiles. Tips for using LinkedIn: ‘Be like you are’ - think about why people work with you, it’s not going to be because of the professional logo on the van. It’ll be you, your approach to your customers. When you’re writing your about section on LinkedIn, this is the part about YOU, not about the work side which is for the experience section. Don’t worry too much about what time you post, just talk to people like you would in a room full of business people. For example, if you’re looking forward to quoting up a garden tomorrow then just say it. Should you use hashtags on LinkedIn? Yes, just read over your caption and a word that seems important just put a hashtag in front of it; these will also go bold. What should you use direct messages for? Think again about being in a room full of business people, would you say ‘it’s lovely to meet you, would you like to buy a garden design?’ You wouldn’t, so that’s exactly the same as messages on LinkedIn. Should you pay to upgrade your account on LinkedIn? The biggest value you will get is seeing who has viewed your profile but if you would do something about it like contacting them it’s probably worth upgrading. Only 9% have the upgraded version so you do not need to upgrade for the best results.
