In this week’s podcast, I am discussing about self-belief, a huge factor in why we either achieve or fall short of our goals. Many of us as business owners often struggle with doubts that have been ingrained in us from childhood or our past experiences. It’s these doubts that can really hold us back. After completing my NLP course recently, which focused on helping clients change their behaviours and set better goals, it’s clear that self-belief plays a massive role in shaping our reality. We can all achieve anything – but it all starts with believing it’s possible for us. Over the last 18 months, my bodybuilding journey has been a personal example of setting a big, scary goal and learning how to work through those doubts. I decided to compete in bodybuilding to push myself out of my comfort zone, setting myself a huge goal. And it wasn’t just about reaching the finish line – it was about growing, changing habits, and developing as a person. I didn’t set a timeline initially because I had no idea how long it would take, but I surrounded myself with the right people who believed in me and helped me through the process. Now, when we set goals, it’s important to look at them from three angles. We’ve all got the inner dreamer – the one who comes up with the big, exciting ideas. But then we’ve got the realist, who steps in and asks, ‘How are we going to achieve this?’ And finally, the critic, who looks for gaps and potential challenges in the plan. I’ve used this process in both my personal life and business, and it’s helped me map out realistic and achievable steps to reach my goals. It’s about knowing what’s possible, what habits need to change, and surrounding yourself with the right support. For me, the realist made me give up alcohol and find a new coach who could push me further. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary to achieve my goal. The critic in me identified that posing on stage would be my biggest challenge – I’m naturally shy in front of crowds. So, I worked with a posing coach who told me to practise every day, even if just for a few minutes. It didn’t come naturally, but with consistent effort, it’s slowly becoming more comfortable. This is a lesson we can all take into our goals – practice and patience are key. Now, with just days to go before I step on stage, I can confidently say that my self-belief has grown massively. I didn’t start this journey looking or feeling like a bodybuilder, but through consistent work and support, I’m now ready to go for it. I’ve learned that surrounding yourself with people who believe in you can be a game-changer – and that belief, both from yourself and others, is what can drive you forward. So, as we head into the last quarter of the year, take some time to review your goals. Think about your dreamer, your realist, and your critic. And remember, if your goals aren’t a little bit scary, they might not be big enough. Let’s keep pushing towards those dreams!
