17. LIFERS - Scott's Dad

Scott finally gets around to interviewing the LIFER he’s known all his life: his dad. Inspired by his own dad, David Lucas decided to be an artist when he was a teenager (sounds familiar) and has been refining his very regional brand of “north-woods” outsider art since he started doing it professionally in his mid-twenties (also pretty familiar). Getting straight answers out of Mr. Lucas can be like pulling teeth, but this is a pretty enjoyable visit to the dentist that includes: Trying to solve the mystery of the cabin. Why life is fishing and fishing is life. Who’s more stoic? Gabe or Scott’s dad? That time in the 1970s when Scott’s dad built the Zion nuclear power plant all by himself. How Mr. Lucas shaped Scott’s merch booth philosophy (and almost everything else, for that matter). And, of course, an epic dad-joke showdown.
