#470 - A Day in the Life of a Man Experiencing Shame in Dating

He wakes up and checks his phone. No new messages. He scrolls back through his chats. She read it but didn’t reply. Shame bubbles quietly. Was I too eager? Too boring? Too much? In the bathroom mirror, he notices the bags under his eyes. His hair’s thinning a bit more. His gut looks soft. He tightens his jaw. No wonder she ghosted me. He opens Instagram. The first story is of his ex — she’s in Italy with a new guy. He's good-looking, stylish, confident. They look happy. So I was replaceable after all. He listens to a podcast while he showers. The host tells men to “man up,” to lead, to be alpha, to take risks. Right, he thinks. But what if I don’t feel confident? What if I don’t know what I’m doing? On the train to work, he sees a beautiful woman reading. He wants to say hello. He rehearses a line in his head but his stomach tightens. What if she laughs at me? What if she sees right through me — needy, awkward, not good enough? He arrives at work. His colleague mentions a date he went on — says women are easy if you have "game." Everyone laughs. He fakes a smile. I haven’t had a real connection in over a year. At lunch, he eats alone. He scrolls through dating apps. Swipe, swipe, swipe. Nothing. No matches today. I’m not attractive enough. No woman wants someone like me. After work, he goes to the gym, pushes hard, hoping to outrun the shame. But when he sees the younger, more muscular guys lifting with ease, he feels like a fraud. Too late for me. Too far gone. That evening, he drafts a message to a woman he matched with last week. He deletes it. Then rewrites it. Deletes it again. Why am I like this?
