My headlamp fizzled and I ended up abandoned at stope 32, between 9 to 11 kilometres to the safety of the Platt where the cage was the only exit from the pits of hell that we descended into each day. This was the most frightening trial. The Author relates his difficulty and the perils of falling into two underground openings 150 meters where a specific horrifying death anticipated him.
