The Cinematography Podcast Episode 59: Walt Lloyd Walt Lloyd set out to study percussion, and as a military brat had little exposure to film as a kid. When a hand injury halted his drum career, he happened upon John Boorman's crew shooting Deliverance in Georgia and decided he wanted a job in the movie business. After working in public television and a production company in San Francisco for a few years, Walt got a chance to be a loader for Jan de Bont, which led to his first big break as a camera assistant on the 1983 film Never Cry Wolf, directed by Carroll Ballard with cinematography by Hiro Narita. One of Walt's earliest films as director of photography was on sex, lies and videotape in 1989, for first-time feature filmmaker Steven Soderbergh. sex, lies and videotape is considered to be the flagship film of the modern independent film movement. Our host Ben Rock and Walt Lloyd also have a personal connection- Walt was the DP for Ben's feature film, Alien Raiders.
