Once upon a time, we were a vulnerable child, taking our cues from the adults around us to work out our value, our values, and how to cope with life. Sometimes the ways that we learnt were not ideal, sometimes we developed coping mechanisms, sometimes we adapted our natural behaviour so that we would be more acceptable, more loved. This inner child stays with us our entire lives and the methods that we used to navigate the world have often stayed with us.When we invite the inner child into our meditation we can begin to understand what that child went through, what that child needed and as adults we have the chance to give that inner child that still remains within us, the unconditional love, the comfort, the support that they needed and still need. I'm not going to pretend that this is easy work, or that it can be achieved in one short sitting! People spend many years coming to terms with their childhood and nurturing their inner child. For it is the inner child that is reflected out in behaviours, reactions and patterns that we demonstrate as adults. Simply sitting with the inner child and giving it your unconditional love is the place to start with this deep and complex work.
