Hips and Spines Don't go out of Place!

The Back Pain Podcast - A podcast by Rob Beaven & Dave Elliott

Many people talk about their hips and spines as being out of alignment, of having ‘slipped out’ and this emotive language has used for some time but this way of describing when something doesn’t feel right can lead to misunderstanding and potentially fear avoidance behaviours. Rob and Dave explain why this language is not only outdated but also incorrect and how manipulation really works along with why it’s about empowering the patient to improve their resilience, have the right information and work in collaboration with their clinician to heal.   KEY TAKEAWAYS When you have pain and your body doesn’t feel right it can feel like something is out of place. Your spinal joints, hip joints and pelvic joints are some of the strongest joints in the body. For these strong joints to be out of place it would take significant trauma on the level of a car crash to cause this. Manipulation, the movement of two joints is equivalent to a mechanical pain killer Manipulation is about creating movement and can be helpful in supporting recovery it’s not about putting something back in place. False beliefs around treatments can lead to fear avoidance behaviour. Clinicians should be empowering the patient to improve their resilience and understand what they can do not what they can’t do. As human beings, we are incredibly resilient. A small change in the language you use can make a big difference   BEST MOMENTS ‘We are designed to move and heal ourselves’ ‘Many people benefit from manipulation and it’s about movement’   VALUABLE RESOURCES The Back Pain Podcast The Back Pain Podcast recommended products affiliate link   ABOUT THE HOSTS Dave Elliot Dave is the owner of Advanced Chiropractic, a chain of Chiropractic and massage therapy clinics in Essex, UK.
