Vittorio De Sica may have been nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in A Farewell to Arms (1957), but he's remembered for directing Italian neorealist films like Shoeshine (1946) and Bicycle Thieves (1948). The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970), made just four years before his death, was De Sica's last great film, made at a time when critics were beginning to think that his career as a great director had screeched to a halt.  It brought his name back into the spotlight and, among others, earned the film an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
