Last month, Don and Tyler embarked on a special quest: to re-read, analyse and discuss Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel in great detail. We are of course talking about Casino Royale (1953). This resulted in a series of three podcasts in which they try to leave no stone unturned. So, is this really the spy novel to end all spy novels? What makes Ian Fleming’s books so addictive to read? Why does Bond fall head over heels in love with Vesper, so much in fact that he lies to his superior, M.? And, most importantly, where the hell is Royale-Lex-Eaux located on a map?! In part 1 we delve into the first nine chapters starting off with 007 already on his mission in France, pondering how someone would try to rob the 'caisse' of a casino. We discuss Bond’s gambling tactics, the proper pronunciation of René Mathis and whether EON missed an opportunity by omitting the bomb attack by Blue Man and Red Man.
