The Āditya Hṛdayam is a mantra composed in verse (30 verses) taken from  the Ramayana (Rāmāyana). This mantra gives us success in our endeavors! The Sage Agastya taught it to Śrī Rāma in order that he may succeed in killing the demon king, Rāvaṇa - with all his ten heads that regenerate every time they are decapitated. It is very difficult to overcome our demonic tendencies. We can put them down, but they come back up. So this mantra in praise of the sun gives us the strength needed to overcome Ravana and all the unhealthy compulsive tendencies he represents within ourselves. Rama, having been exiled to the forest, was roaming with his brother & wife. At a certain point along their journey, his wife, Sītā, was abducted by Rāvaṇa. Thus Rāma went to battle. But Rāvaṇa was very powerful. He was the demon king of Srilanka. So Rama recruited an army and they attacked and fought to regain his wife, Sita. Rama fought with Ravana for days. He was very exhausted on the brink of death. But after some healing herbs brought to him by Hanuman and reciting this Aditya Hridaya mantra, he was refreshed and able to succeed in slaying Ravana!
