Categories:
Writer-producer-director, Robert Meyer Burnett, takes a closer look at the controversies surrounding statements made by Variety reviewer Dennis Harvey about actress Carey Mulligan's performance. Ms. Mulligan took issue with the review, suggesting the reviewer was questioning the central idea behind the film A PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN and insinuating she was not hot enough to be the film's femme fatale. But we wrote "controversies", didn't we?As it turns out, after over eleven months on the Variety website with no questions or complaints, the publication's editors responded to Mulligan's complaint by posting an apology at the top of the article, effectively disclaimed the review and throwing the reviewer "under the bus." Is this a case of two wrongs making a right? RMB doesn't think so and explains why both the reviewer and the publication were wrong. In addition, Rob responds to letters from fellow Imagination Connoisseurs and questions from fans in the livestream chat during the show.(ROBSERVATIONS Episode #616 • Originally streamed on February 9, 2021)
