It tells the story of a 9.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Anchorage, Alaska in 1964 and how a part-time radio reporter named Genie Chance held her community together. Mooallem recounts how he got his hands on the recordings of Chance's broadcasts and reported out the full story of the disaster, which had been largely forgotten outside Alaska; he also compares Anchorage's recovery from the earthquake to what people around the world are doing now in response to COVID-19.
