This was an irresponsible lending time and led to the credit crunch that negatively impacted the global economy. When the market crashed, many found themselves in negative equity, forcing them to face repossession. This also led to greater restrictions in the mortgage market. Many mortgages were based upon the base rate of the Bank Of England, plus a small percentage. This meant that properties that hadn't made cashflow, were suddenly making very positive cash flow.
