In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast Tory Archbold chats to Lizzie Renkert, co-founder of We Are Kindred. Lizzie spent 18 years at the top of her media career working at Marie Claire Magazine and then as the Editor of Madison Magazine. The media landscape hit a crisis and when Maddison closed Lizzie hit rock bottom. ‘When Maddison closed, I was devastated, I was also pregnant so looking for a job was hard. I was at a crossroads.’ Seeing a gap in the market, Lizzie teamed up with her sister Georgie to start We Are Kindred. ‘The first couple of years of Kindred were really exciting as you are building something from scratch, so there is nothing to compare it to and you just see growth.’ Lizzie explains this was a very different experience from the world of magazines where she witnessed year on year decline. When COVID hit their global business she needed to step into her true power to survive and found herself optimistic. She says ‘I wanted to find a way to continue to engage with our loyal customer base – they are not just people that buy clothes. It is a community, who we have an emotional connection with’. She began to focus on human connection and found this loyalty with her customers helped turn the challenge of Covid into a possibility of growth with her local distribution network. Whenever you start a business, there are lifestyle compromises, even if you are working from passion in your heart. Lizzie says, ‘Working in the corporate world there are incredible benefits, but the advantages of working for yourself far outweigh the difficulties.’ Mother guilt was a big part of Lizzie’s life when she was in corporate - but over time she has learnt what she needs to do to care for not only herself but for her family. ‘Now that I know myself better, I know how to manage the overwhelm. I have great relationships and that contributes to my happy outlook.’ So, what are Lizzie’s three most powerful tools she has learnt in 2020 to make the challenges appear like speed humps? Well, she has learnt that you are more resilient than you think. The hard times will come but they will pass. No idea is a good idea until you try it. She encourages us to, ‘trust your gut’. These are the small steps you can take to enjoy success in 2021. And finally, Lizzie shares what loves about taking powerful steps towards the future you want.
