A meaningful business with Anna Saunders, co-founder of PRIMER

Powerful Stories with Tory Archbold - A podcast by Tory Archbold

In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from Anna Saunders, co-founder of PRIMER.   Anna left a stable publishing job to team up with Felicity Robinson and co-founded Primer.com.au in 2019. Only six months after their launch, Mumbrella named PRIMER best new publisher of the year and Anna shares how this incredible company started. ‘I became frustrated with the digital journalism that was being served to women – it was often disposable and celebrity click-bait - and I wanted to run stories that had an impact.’      At the end of last year, Anna was faced with burnout and was completely shattered - ‘When people launch small business’ there is this idea that you have to push yourself, but I am not convinced that you need to burn out. It’s about working out what only you can do in your business, and then working out what you can delegate.’ The key to collaboration lies in the power of partnership which then leads to magic. ‘The more voices you can bring in the better – otherwise you end up being an echo chamber for your own thoughts and experiences.’    Each month over 30K women head to PRIMER groundbreaking news - more than ever women are looking to be inspired by other powerful stories. ‘I’m always looking for the nuggets in the news story that suggests there is a story there.’ It’s just a matter of cyberstalking and finding the inspirational stories. ‘We’re really proud of the fact that we elevate women’s voices. Everyone has a story to share’ says Anna.    Anna’s inside advice for female small business owners looking to build brand equity and be featured on PRIMER. ‘It needs to be unique, either in your product or an interesting personal story, and have that social purpose piece. PRIMER operates as a social enterprise and delivers 50% of profits to women’s NGOs. Tory asks Anna why she returns the profits of the business to help others – ‘I’ve always had a passion for social justice – I felt like a women’s platform which is pushing for change could be a really powerful vehicle.’   Bringing your business goals into alignment with your personal goals, as a mother, is defiantly a juggle. We hear her top tips for doing it all and the tech apps that both Tory and Anna use to organise life.    Primer (noun) is defined as ‘Something that gets you ready for what comes next’. Anna shares her goals for 2021 and how she plans to conquer them.   And finally, what Anna loves about Powerful Steps – “It is all about connection – and I didn’t get that in my early 20s. I thought it was all about the work but it is relationships that help you build your business.’    So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Anna Saunders.  Links: Sign up to the Powerful Steps #coffeechallenge to gain Tory’s proven formula for building a global network, with three coffee dates a week.
