Making a sacrifice to appease God feels misguided, outdated, and irrational. But, if we take a step back and look a little closer at our own lives, we can't help but notice we're still erecting altars and presenting sacrifices in an attempt to pacify God and relieve our conscience; they just look a little different. We run ourselves ragged trying to appease God, failing to realize, or in some cases, fully trust that because of Christ's sacrifice, God is already pleased with us. We don't know what to do with our freedom because we've grown so accustomed to life in captivity. Familiar misery can be more appealing than uncertain hope. Whenever someone leaves one season for another, a reordering must take place. God's purpose in the ritual and rhythms was to reorder our hearts and minds to live in this new way. Learning to live in a new way requires something from us. The altar serves as a reminder of a reordering and an invitation to trust. Our willingness to surrender hinges on our ability to remember.
