Living in a culture of distrust, we hesitate to give ourselves away fully. Having been burnt, taken advantage of, or let down, we resist getting involved and responding to the needs around us. Life without love is to live without an adequate foundation for the relationships we long for. Nothing holds us together, so we drift apart— disintegrated, distrusting, undermined. The opposite of serving is withholding. The opposite of a servant is a preserver. But, we miss out when we hold on. Amid learning to give our lives away, we discover, experience, and share the fullness of life God promises.
