During these somewhat dark COVID times, we can often be at risk of surrendering to the doom and gloom of isolation, boredom, and hopelessness; but in the spirit of Christmastime and the Holiday Season, allow yourself to be reminded by our youth that hope lies ahead in both the present and future.  In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Canadian female surfing prodigy, Mathea Olin.  Listen as this 17 year old pro surfer takes this 38 year old kook to school all hour long while she drops wisdom bombs about being yourself, keeping fun at the centre, inspiring others, staying stoked in trying times, training hard, loving what you do, having a growth mindset, and eating ice cream on the road to the Olympics. Mathea Olin was born on February 2, 2003 in Canmore, Alberta.  At six years old she and her family moved to Tofino, BC where she fell in love with surfing and began competing only four years later.  Her accolades include: winning Canada’s first ever international medals in surfing which included gold in longboard and bronze in shortboard at the 2017 Pan Am Surf Games; and bronze in longboard at the 2019 Pan Am Games.  Mathea’s aspirations include competing in the world Olympics and being the first Canadian to enter into the World Tour.  Keep your sights set on this Queen of the Peak; because as long as she froths for surf, she is bound to make Canadian Surfing Herstory!
