Gargi Bhattacharyya on racial capitalism

This episode is a conversation between ourEconomy’s Europe Editor, Laura Basu, and academic and author Gargi Bhattacharyya. Bhattacharyya is a professor of sociology at the University of East London, and author of the book Rethinking Racial Capitalism: Questions of Reproduction and Survival. She has written widely on racism, sexuality, global cultures and the ‘war on terror’. This interview centres around one question, “is capitalism racist?” – the subject of an upcoming ourVoices documentary. Bhattacharyya begins by laying out her own understanding of “racial capitalism”, what it means, and how it differs from traditional liberal conceptions of racism, and anti racism.
