When we attach our self worth to our achievements, it can be brutal. If we suffer failure, we can feel as though this is a reflection of our true worth, and our mental wellbeing suffers accordingly. A common problem in the world of sports, is that funding is low, and all income from the pursuit must be fought for. Many are on minimum wage. This only adds to the sense of negative self-worth and in some cases, desperation, as well as the pressures of the sport itself. Burnout occurs when we attempt to give more than we have in our tank. If we are only running at 60% of our capacity, then striving to do better, work harder, and give 100% when we don't have it, is a sure road to burnout.
