Then we begin our preview of the Critics Choice Awards by revealing the results of a small statistical research project about a huge question: which Oscars precursor awards show matters most. The answers will shock and awe and help nobody. Then there’s our film by film preview of the Critics Choice Awards. So instead of another category by category set of predictions that’ll dissipate minutes after this Sunday’s Critics Choice ceremony on the CW, we decided to discuss some overall awards profiles for each of the major contenders. Is Nomadland poised for its best night yet? Or will the critics spread the love as they have in recent years? And if so, who benefits most? Minari, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 seem to be ready for more. But with many close races, we might be in for some more surprises. Does David Fincher keep drinking? Does Promising Young Woman become underrated again after being overrated after being underrated? Can Da 5 Bloods overcome its snubs with one major win at Choice? And are we taking One Night In Miami for granted at this point? We discuss this next Oscars precursor by way of its major contenders. Finally, we finish off the show with a look at the Annie Awards and how the Animated Feature category might play out on Oscar Nomination Monday. Plus, we briefly discuss the Visual Effects Society noms and the Best Sound category via Cinema Audio Society, and Golden Reel Awards. As always, we want to hear your thoughts, predictions, and rooting interests for this and all the award shows we cover.
