It seems to me that those who speak of professional development and self-actualization often treat them as separate pursuits—one material, the other spiritual. Yet I find in my own experience, and in observing the lives of those around me, that these paths are not merely parallel but often one and the same. The ancient Greeks admonished us to "know thyself," and where better to discover the contours of our character than in the daily struggles and triumphs of our work? For it is in labor that our strengths and weaknesses, our passions and aversions, are laid bare before us with an honesty that idle contemplation rarely achieves.
