She learns that they've all been instructed to be kind to her, and to not discuss the accident. She finally confronts Mirren and Gat about not responding to her emails while she was in Europe with her father. Mirren says to answer emails felt like homework, and apologized by offering Cady purple sea shells. Gat is aware of the differences in social status between he and Cady, and tells her that he is hesitant about a relationship with her because she only knows him from their summers together on the island. He compares their experiences to Heathcliff and Catherine in Wuthering Heights. The aunts all have their eyes on the Boston house, and their is animosity among them over who might inherit it.
