Jem is uneasy about this as he thinks the gang of men who came to the house earlier that night were klansmen out to get Atticus for defending a Negro. Instead of going to bed, Jem tells Scout he's going out. Scout insists she's going with him, and they also stop to get Dill. At the jailhouse, a tense situation arises when a group of men show up to start trouble. The men want Tom Robinson, and it seems they will go through Atticus to get to him.
