Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) Werther suffers more from his unrequited love for Charlotte. He visits her, although they have decided he should no longer do so, and he reads to her from Songs of Ossian, which makes them both weep. They share a moment and a kiss after which Charlotte retreats to another room. Werther continues his letters to Wilhelm, and he is certain that the only remedy for his torturous love is the grave.
