He is advised to keep a report of his thoughts and remembrances prior to and after the operation. He works in a bakery and is often the butt of cruel jokes from people who he thinks are his friends. His doctors tell him that the operation may not be successful, and if it isn't, he will have to go back to a state-run mental hospital. They tell him that the change in intelligence is not immediately noticeable. Charlie is eager to see the changes which will indicate to him that the operation was a success; that he is smart. They introduce him to Algernon, a white mouse who has already undergone the operation. Algernon easily frequently beats Charlie at a maze game, and Charlie is sad to find out that if Algernon does not successfully work the maze, he will not find his food. As Charlie remembers, he writes. We begin to see his metamorphosis in real time as Charlie's writing begins to change.
