He reads the headlines about his experience in Chicago and learns that his family are all still alive. He finds his father who now has his own barbershop. He gets a shave and haircut, and then decides not to reveal his identity to his father who doesn't recognize him. It has been 17 years since they last saw each other. He meets Fay, his neighbor, and in intimacy with her, he begins to realize that the old Charlie is still there, watching him. He returns to the lab, but not without first obtaining permission from the foundation to be able to conduct his own research.
