Dickens (1859) Darnay paces in his cell and awaits the hour of his death. To his surprise, he is visited in the jail by Carton, who asks him to change clothes with him, and to write an unaddressed letter to make good on a promise he once made, which Carton dictates. Darnay doesn't think it will work, and there is no time to explain. Carton uses the meds he obtained from the chemist to render Darnay unconscious, and Barsad takes him out of the jail. When the jailer arrives for Evremonde, Carton follows him to the gallows. He meets a doomed young seamstress who has committed no crime, and asks if he will hold her hand.
