Dickens (1859) As they continue on to Dover in the carriage, the narration suggests that people are a secret and a mystery to each other, just like Mr. Lorry and the two other passengers in the carriage; and also on a larger scale. Mr. Lorry, the oldest employee of Tellson's Bank, drifts in and out of sleep during the ride and dreams of digging someone out a grave; someone who has been buried alive for 18 years. He informs the buried person (ghost) that he has been recalled to life, and asks him if he still wishes to live. The ghost answers the question differently each time he is asked, saying that he would die if he sees "the woman" too soon. He also cries wanting to see "the woman" immediately. Thanks for listening.
