Sheriff Mapes and his deputy arrive at Mathu's house. Mapes sees that Candy and the old men have gathered there. Candy tells Mapes that she killed Beau. Not believing her, Mapes tells Deputy Griffin to bring one of the men to him. Griffin brings Uncle Billy and Gable to face Mapes, one at a time, and both men claim responsibility for the murder. Neither man backs down even after Mapes hits them across the face.
