Gil faces his father, Fix, who has been waiting for him so they can ride out to Marshall. Gil tells Fix that he has been to Marshall, and found old Black men with shotguns ready for any trouble Fix might bring over the death of Beau. Gil struggles to tell Fix that he is against vigilante justice, that the time for that kind of thing has passed. Gil is also concerned that riding out to Marshall as Luke Will keeps pushing Fix to do, will also hurt his chance of becoming All-American.
