KDMEO Episode 51 - Hospital Ship (병원선) 1-4

K-Drama My Eyes Out - A podcast by Judy, Linda and Teresa

Categories:

Judy and Linda are finally starting a new Korean drama! We watched the first four episodes of "Hospital Ship" (병원선), an MBC drama starring Ha JiWon, Kang MinHyuk, Lee SeoWon and Kim InSik. Judy is annoyed that she couldn't tell apart Kim Jaegul (Lee SeoWon) a.k.a. "Short Face", "Oriental medicine doctor" from Cha Joonyoung (Kim InSik) a.k.a. "Long Face", "Dentist". Linda is weirded out that Kwak Hyun (Kang MinHyuk) is writing his progress notes in English. Is...is that a real thing? Linda feels left out that she's the only one who doesn't seem to know who Albert Schweitzer is. Click here to read the Wikipedia page of Dr. Schweitzer.  At 0:51:52, we launch into a philosophical digression about reincarnation. At 1:17:15, Judy asserts that the hospital ship captain has a Gyungsang provincial accent, but it actually appears to be a Choongchung accent. Sorry! The mother in the "Reply 1997/1994/1988" series does have a Gyungsang accent.   Some Korean terms:   진짜 사나이: [jin-jja-sa-na-ee] "Real Men"; Korean reality show showing celebrities joining army training for a short period. 장김치: [jang-kim-chi] kimchi made with soy sauce instead of salt and red pepper flakes; Judy and Linda have never heard of this dish. 간장: [gan-jang] soy sauce. 큰엄마: [keun-um-ma] "big mom"; wife of one's father's older brother. 작은엄마: [jak-eun-um-ma] "small mom"; wife of one's father's younger brother. 한의사: [han-ui-sa] Traditional Asian medicine practitioner.  샘: [sem] slang for "teacher"; shortened form of "선생님" [sun-seng-nim". 찌질한: [jji-jil-han] "like a loser" How did you find the first week of "Hospital Ship"?
