On December 31st, 2019, a local municipal health commission in China’s Hubei Province reported a cluster of cases of pneumonia. Merely three months later the World Health Organization proclaimed the novel coronavirus ‘a global pandemic’ – a historic turning point which effectively accelerated strategic ambitions by major geo-political actors. While the Biden Administration seized power in Washington two years following the first reported’ cases of the so-called COVID-19; on January 20th, 2021, China hurriedly informed its American counterparts, merely two months after assuming office, that it regards the United States a peer nation – effectively proclaiming an era of strategic competition. Meanwhile on the 24th of February of this year, Russia - which for a long time aspires to force a separation between Europe and its transatlantic allies - launched a deliberate military invasion into Ukraine, believing it could overrun its Western neighbor within just several days. To Moscow’s dismay, Western resilience, led predominately by Britain, the European Commission and the United States, has forced the Kremlin to contend with a ‘war-of-attrition’ expected to persist deep into the looming winter.
