The same countries are there, inhabiting mainlands and islands, including two entities whose status is unsettled - the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus and the Gaza Strip. Yet what was a quiet sea, seasonal storms notwithstanding, turned into troubled waters because of two factors - the newly discovered resources in contested Exclusive Economic Zones and the assertive policy of the Ankara government under Recep Tayep Erdogan.
