The real magic of a film festival is getting to explore and actually take chances with things....On this episode we are in the deep end of the Toronto International Film Festival which is running from Sept. 7th through the 17th in our fair city of Toronto.Today, we dive into the world of short film and the importance of it's placement at a festival like this. In the Short Cuts 2 Programme, it's time to look at 'Bloom'.Bloom explores our innate desire to affiliate with nature. Fragile after a breakup, Laurel (played by Jodi Balfour) searches for stability, only to form a strange connection with a houseplant. As the film progresses, the plant appears to take root in Laurel's psyche; making her question where it ends and she begins—a metaphor for the interconnectedness between humans and nature, and the consequences that resistance between the two creates. We had the pleasure of talking with up and coming director Kasey Lum about the origins of the film, shooting on 35mm, the importance of the short form and so very much more. The first showing for Short Cuts Programme 2 is on Friday Sept 8th at 6:50PM.
